Dynamics Deformers Particles

In the process & production lesson we would be introduced to the dynamics and particle systems purposed for design processes. The outcome of the workshops will be a series of experiments using Cinema 4d.

1.              In the lesson I had to create modifiers for design purposes.
2.              I then had to create materials and environments for the design.
3.              Then I had to create particle & dynamic systems.
4.              I rendered my work from my experiment, my examples are below.

Above are test renders of striped coloured balls falling down a spiralled shoot. In the first image I have created a squared spiralled shoot, where as in the second image the shoot is in the shape of a star. A gravity effect has been applied to these tests so that the balls fall in a realistic motion downwards in the shoot.

Above is a experimentation I created with in the workshop. In this experiment we looked at creating depth and meaning whilst using 2D shapes. We had to create an effect were numbers squares appeared as if they were flying of the page in a random post modernist fashion.

Above I have experimented with falling type. For this task we had to choose random letters in a certain typeface, and then apply a gravitational effect to them so that they fall and scatter across the ground and large type letter.

Overall I found this particular workshop to be very enjoyable as it was something I was always interested in learning how to create although I would like to have been a little more creative and added in more in this lesson. My knowledge of Cinema 4d software is growing gradually, yet slowly.

3D VISUALISATION FOR DESIGN & MOVEMENT - TASK 1

Production Layouts

This was the second process & production workshop back after the Christmas holidays. In this workshop I learnt how to use Cinema 4D in conjunction with Adobe Illustrator. The aim of this workshop was to take a 2D image of our initials or name and make it into a 3D image using the software. Before we began our Cinema 4D process we needed an Illustrator file to work with, this file only had to be simple and display our name our initials.

  1. First I had to create an illustrator file in which I would create our work, ready to import into Cinema 4D. I had to confirm that my document was zeroed off so that it would not cause any problems when importing.
  2.  After we created our designs, I saved it however I had to make sure that my Illustrator file was saved as Illustrator 8. This will allow us to open it in Cinema 4.
  3. I then set up a file in Cinema 4D that replicated that of my Illustrator file, and merged my file into the 3D software.
  4. I then began to extrude my text and round the edges slightly giving it a 3D effect. I then added colours to all aspects of my design including the background.
  5. I added lighting and shadow where appropriate in my design to give it a realistic effect.
  6. Finally I rendered my design into a Jpeg image, which can be seen bellow.
Overall I am very pleased with the final outcome of my design. I feel that the tools I have used iN this session are easy enough that I could possibly use the software with out guidance. If I were to develop my work I would actually focus it on an actual logo design and use more details and textures. I feel cinema 4D could also be helpful to widen my skill set in graphic design

CHARACTER FOR PACKAGING & MOVEMENT - TASK 3

Generating Package Prototype

In this workshop I would be focusing on printing out my cereal prototype, and proofing it for any errors or imperfections which may have come out in print. Through printing out a prototype I could be saving any unexpected cost which could have occurred when printing the final piece. Bellow is an image of the net design that I sent to the printer which has been developed through my idea generation in earlier stages of this module.

  1. I began with confirming the size of my file making sure it was roughly A2 size, from this I placed my design into a template ready for print.
  2. Once my net was printed onto thin card I began to cut it out using a scalpel and a cutting mat.
  3. I then folded the net together to form the mock up cereal box and glued all the correct sides together.
  4. After my design was complete I photographed my outcome which is shown below

Experimentation

In this stage of my process & production module I furthered my skills in the physical studio workshops. In this task we had to gather our chosen typography layouts, which we had previously created in the lesson before. I decided to choose my first type form which was based on music and how music is written as I felt it was the strongest, however I also believed they all worked very well together so this was a tough decision to make but I made a decision through process of elimination and also asking my flat mates which they thought was best. With our chosen typography we had to develop it into a physical form.

The typography I had chosen was a very fancy and fresh looking type, due to it being based of the shapes used in writing music. Therefore I wanted to develop this type into a physical form, which would give it crisp edges and not distract your attention away from the type its self. I first tried to stencil my design and paint the type onto the page with a fine brush, although after many attempts I could not get the paint to stop bleeding under the stencil. My development I decided to use stencils and a quail and that looked okay but still wasn’t what I was wanting and I very much so liked the paint aspect of my idea so I used a paint sponge to print the type onto slides of paper.

To do this I rendered my typeface onto the computer first and then printed it out onto thick sheets of paper in which I would then cut out the type from the paper. To transfer the type onto the other piece of paper I used a paint sponge, I did this so I could try and get a nice even finish over each of the letters and there be no patches but to be honest it didn’t work out for me for my first two attempt’s but thankfully it worked out well on the third attempt. The paint and crisp lines however it wasn't 100% effective when creating crisp lines this is were a screen print system would have been useful and have given me a much better out come and finish.

GeneratiCharacter Packaging

In this process and production workshop we would be focusing on developing our character we had previously created and placing them into a cereal brand. From my development in the previous character design I have decided to further my idea for a brand called "Panda Puffs". I decided to focus mainly on this idea as I felt it was the stronger contender and was best suited to a serial box character.
1.              I began by importing the initial front cover I had created as sketch, I made sure to adjust this file in Adobe Photoshop so that I could trace from it.
2.              I then imported the net of the cereal box which was provided to us and can be seen bellow. I used the pen tool to trace the shape of the box so I had a blank canvas to work from.

3.              After creating my canvas I then started to create my design from my sketch using Adobe Illustrator using the pen tool and using colours that would show my character in its best way.

To create my cereal net I have used tools in Adobe Illustrator such as the Pen and shape tool. I feel like doing this task has made think about the process I create things a lot more, as I normally work straight from the computer and not really designing and sketching as much as I used to mainly because I’m to into want to get to the main piece of work and being impatient. However I feel through drawing the design out first gives you a very clear idea of what your design looks like and knowing that my work can be improved on the computer shows me that there more potential and gives me a confidence boost in knowing my idea could look much better.

I am very pleased with my design and the process it has taken to make it. My design is based of a fiction brand called "Panda Puffs" this is a fun fruity puff cereal which appeals to a younger market. My aim for the colouring of the design was to make it subtle as I could for the target audience. I wanted the character and text to stand out the most on the box I feel I have done this. If I were to develop my design I would probably work on the background and try and make it more interesting than it is.
